I'm new to the e-bike scene and bumping into questions. I've been planning and reading for a couple of months and have finally made some upgrades for comfort to my XC00. As I near in on the expensive part, the motor, I'm conflicted. I'm considering adding a 8 or 9 cog freewheel (instead of the stock 7) and wondering if I need to get the 120mm version of the BBSHD so I can shim it out for an improved driveline, or if 100mm would work. Or... does it really even matter since it'll be an e-bike and I can just use the motor for hill climbs. I'm not trying to hit 40 mph with this bike but I do want to have fun with it (ie. at least 30mph) and be able to tackle any hill I come up against (I'm in Colorado.)
I'm also considering if I should put hydraulic brakes on it as well. Stopping from 30mph with my 210lb self on it... I'd prefer as confident a brake as possible. I figure if I'm doing that, I'm looking to go with the Zoom kit on Amazon and I should probably do that before the motor so that I can get the hydraulic cut offs from the start.
ok personally I wouldnt convert that bike. but if its what you have, it fits you well, and youre set on it, you can. Id only suggest the cheapest ebike kit, BBS02, still a great motor. I wouldnt put a BBSHD on that bike (avoid putting high end kits on a low end bike), although as a great motor you can always swap it to a different bike later. no suspension, i guess the fat tires help with some cushion. but be aware that is not meant for mtn biking/rough terrain, more a commuter / easy trail bike. also, 9 gears is definitely better than 7 for an ebike. 10-11 speeds is ideal. hydraulic brakes are good, youll have to figure out the magnetic cutoff placement for those, not an issue usually. the motor size refers to the motor mount width, which must fit inside your bottom bracket diameter, 95%+ of bikes are 68mm-120mm. figure out your BB size first before ordering, use a shim to make it snug in the BB if u need. watch videos on install and stuff. easy.
saw this article on it. https://kenpua.com/northrock-xc00-fat-tire-e-bike/ worth a read. decent competitor model mentioned on amazon... uses a shitty hub motor so never go that route. only mid drive motors recommended
