So, a little background. I worked as a NYC bike messenger for 7 1/2 years, I didn't own a car a till I was 30, so I did everything on my bicycle, Think about carrying your typical 6' xmas tree on your back on your fixed gear in the freezing rain. Fast forward 10 years, I'm married with 2 kids with a family car. I do not want to have two cars, I cant afford it and do not want to have to deal with two separate registrations and insurances, parking, cleaning, etc.
I've looked at different possible alternatives, I just need a way to commute into Jersey to my job and back, its about 15 miles, but I need to be able to get there in about the same time as I get to work on my car. So this is where some might say 'm irrational.
I know I can hold 23 mph average on flats for over an hour, so when I think about an electric bike, that can go 30 mph on its own. I want to combine the wattage I can produce on my own with that of the motor, so that I can go about 40-50 mph with the electric bike. Most of the bikes have governors that limit the output once it hits a certain speed. I want to make a hybrid bike, I want to be able to go at a rationale speed when I'm on local streets but If I hit a local rural route, I want to be able to give it everything I got and maybe hit 45 mph average.
I've looked into scooters and motorcycles that can hit those speeds, but I know if I cross over the Bayonne bridge bike path, any cops that are there could just stop and ticket me. And I know that when the snow starts coming down I want to have larger bicycle wheels on me for better traction and handling. So is there a practical E-bike solution for me. Excuse my ignorance on the subject.
Thank Y'all
Thank you very much for the information, doing a lot of research now.
its not so much about speed friend, anything over 30 mph gets dangerous on any bike, esp an ebike. a good refined motor like a bafang can get you up to 30-40 mph with the right gear setup which is plenty fast, with some downhill or low incline stuff u turn the motor off and let it coast. 15 miles x 2 ways or 30 miles on a battery charge = no problem, 52v 15-20 Ah batt pack. recommend bafang bbs02 750w if u wanna be technically legal or bbshd 1000w if u want the extra power (but weight also) . 3000w cyclone or CYC motors are heavier beefier and much more power but also more dangerous, often overkill, for off road use only
