Hi,
I have a fairly vintage restored bike that I picked up from a non-profit organization a few years ago. I've put a lot of work into making it a solid road cycling bike for riding with friends. My rides have started to get longer and more difficult and I have been thinking about converting it into an e-bike with a small motor and battery to act as an assist on hills or other challenging parts of my rides. I ride pretty much exclusively on roads and paved cycleways.
I've been doing lots of research on different DIY methods and how I could approach this with the bike I do have on hand instead of getting a separate donor bike. Here are some pictures of my bike:
I suppose the first question I would have is: Would this frame be an ok donor to convert into an ebike? I recognize that it's using v-brakes, but they've been maintained well and hold up quite good even in the rainy season. My initial thoughts were to attempt either a front drive or mid drive kit, and to go fairly low power as the purpose of this is more to give me an assist on hills or difficult parts of my ride.
I would love to know if anyone else is in a similar position.
All help appreciated and I'm more than willing to provide more details to find a solution. I'm pretty handy and technically savvy so I'm not above challenging myself either. Thanks!
P.S. I just measured my front dropout and it's at about 100mm, I presume that my rear dropout is slightly bigger in the 120mm range
If you intend to ride that bike as a road bike as it is intended for, I think it is a fine bike to convert. I have converted several similar vintage bikes for customers with no issues. See the gallery of my webpage for some examples. As for the weight issue, a bike like that can support riders from 120lbs to 240lbs. An extra 16 lbs for motor and battery is likely negligible depending on the rider weight.

You should must consider this 3 wheel electric bikes for seniors
i would suggest against converting bikes of that style. firstly, its dangerous. that frame is NOT meant for adding an ebike kit, it has no suspension, and very thin front tire supports. adding 20-30 lbs of motor and battery to a frame that thin is not a good idea. you want some suspension ideally, on a modern, solid metal frame. idtry to find a better hardtail bike.
