New to the community. Howdy all. Hailing from the Tacoma WA area.
After looking high and low for a fat tire bike I finally picked up these aluminum frame Northrock XC00 bikes from Costco (mnf by giant). I was so pleased with the $430 price point, I knee jerked and bought two of them.
I intend to convert them to 750W Bafang BBSHD mid drive with a battery pack that has Panasonic Generation A cells (aka GA cells) / guts,
Reviews of this bike point to upgrades such as increasing the front rotor from 160 to 180mm. Puncture resistant liners, and possibly a shock absorbing seat post. A side mirror, and ergonomic palm rest grips are in the foreseeable future as well.
I'm intending to convert these to beach cruisers, which will mean front head tube stem extensions, and cruiser handlebars. I'm concerned the brake, and shifter cables won't reach.
I will likely increase tooth count on the front ring. I would prefer a working brake light, and would like to add a headlight.
What would you do if you were me??
I legitimately didn't realize that Johnny did a build of this until today. Very cool video.
@1fitz I can't do the BBS02 because I have to accommodate the 100mm bottom bracket. I needed to go with a BBSHD. I went for the higher end Super Shark 52V, 17 ah battery due to the more robust current draw profile the additional cells buy you, as recommended by Johnny.
The model is XC00 (zero zero). Upgrade pathways on this line of bikes include XC6 (Don't know what 6 stood for- was discontinued, but it did have front suspension forks and 2.1" wheels., XC27 (27.5" Wheels), XC29 (29" wheels), XCF (F+ Feature Packed - 10 gear Shimano cassette), XCW (1.5" Wheels).
My video takeaways:
A USB charging output is available on the DPC14 (850C) display, so you can charge your phone.
Go to a 28 tooth low gear to get better hill climbing capability.
Thanks @1fitz. I'll take those recommendations to heart.
Nice you could likely convert those with few issues. Id recommend the BBSO2 kits (750w) to save a bit, keep it legal everywhere, and still have plenty of power for you. Shark style batteries could mount just fine in that triangle. All the mods you want to do are easy, see my other post for the mods on my Montague bike. Short cables may be a problem when adding a riser extender tube. In my case it was only the front brake that needed to add 4-5 inches. Others just barely made the length with the riser tube raised up to 1 inch under max (3.6"). The Upan bike riser bar I chose moves it up just over an inch. Love it
