If I buy a complete kit from Johnny, will he be available for consultation if I have any issues ?
I will relate my experience, which has ended up to be excellent, but with a few hicups along the way. I bought the BBS02 with 48V/17.5A package from J Nerdout in the spring of 2022. It comes with all the bells and whistles including wired headlight, sensors and throttle. Since I live in Alberta Canada, the 750 watt motor and throttle are not exactly street legal here. However, by omitting the throttle (pedal assist only) and programming the motor to limit speed, I think I should be OK.
But there were some installation problems, and it was not as easy to install as the various helpful videos would indicate. I have a Cannondale Quick4 hybrid bike which I use only for street and road trips. All my research and forum searching seemed to indicate that the Bafang BBS02 would fit in the bottom bracket of my bike. Not being an experienced mechanic (bike or otherwise) I enlisted a fellow who had installed a few motors to do it for me. When we went to install the motor, the spindle would not quite fit through the bottom bracket hole. So I found another bike mechanic here (in Calgary) who specializes in retrofitting ebike motors and the problem was resolved by doing a bit of grinding on the inside of the hole (it was not quite to tolerance). Not a job for your average amateur.
In the end, I love my modified road bike. I can now climb the hills around here and keep up with the stronger cyclists in my club.
So before you buy that motor from Johnny, do your research and make sure your bike can fit both the motor, and the battery. There are many different specs for the diameter of the bottom bracket, and there has to be enough room between the downtube and the toptube to mount the battery.
Depending on your current bike configuration, there can be some other issues which I encountered. If your bike has an integrated rear brake handle and gear shifter, you need another little sensor piece. I also had to purchase an adjustable mounting bracket to fit the battery on the downtube.
... a happy ebiker ....
