I want to purchase a ToSeven DM01 kit to convert my Motobecane Night Train fat bike. it is the same frame that comes on the Sturgis.
It has a 100mm bottom bracket, but the chain stays are wide to accomidate large wheels. I have the following quesions:
Should I get a 100mm or 120mm wide DM01. Others with a BBSHD and my frame have stated that they had to use 120mm to have the cranks the proper distance evenly With 100mm, they have to somehow shim one side and then they are not even. See pic for width.
From a gearing standpoint, I currently have a 10 speed 11-36 cassette. I was going to upgrade to a 11-48 cassette and ordered the parts before I made the decision to convert the bike. Now, I am wondering if there is any value in going with 11-48 for an e-bike. Do I really need gearing that low? What size front sprocket is recommended? I am shooting for 25-30mph top speed. I don't think I need more than that.
My riding will be light commuting in the summer on 29er wheels and fat biking in trails in the winter on the fat bike wheels.
Thanks,
Tom
Tom this is actually a gravity Bullseye rebranded with a nukeproof decal. It has 4 thous. miles on it.
I run a 36 chain ring and a 11 x 36 cassette. I am running a 100mm BBSHD. As I told you I run the Gravity Bullseye. The bullseye does have a 100mm BB as the Motobacane you have. The difference is in the chain stay widths. The Bike you plan on using is going to have to run a 120mm motor to help you with the clearance on the chain stay. Run the 120mm motor with a 42 leakki or luna chain ring and you can correct the chain line. You will not be able to run a smaller chain ring as the offset is not there. The Luna ring has the most offset. The BBSHD with a one to one ratio will pull most anything you want to ride. 42 tooth chain ring and 11 42 or 11 x 46 will be more than enough. This cassette can be broken down to 6 gears and shimmed out towards the outside of the stay yielding an even better chain line. As I have said the BBSH is a beast on this set up. I have 4000 thousand miles on this build and only changed one chain and one cassette. Never thrown a chain nor broken any parts. Nuke proof, pun intended. Build it and enjoy. Alan
I would go with the 120mm as the chain stay width is blown out of proportion. This is the problem with a 100mm BB and such wide rear end. Your chainring is going to hit the stay with the 100mm. I run a gravity bullseye which has 100mm BB and you can barely squeeze a 26x4.0 on the rear with the narrow rear end. The regular bullseye is much narrower which makes a good chain line. Run the 120 and shim the bottom bracket to clear the stays. Better than grinding on the bike to make the 100mm fit.
