Hi. To Johnny... thank you for this resource and your videos.
I have been riding e-bikes as my sole form of transportation for about 15 years. I bought a couple of e-bikes early on (one hub and one mid-drive), rebuilt those and then started doing some conversions. I am a hobbyist and my aim is reliable transportation rather than hot rodding and that sort of thing.
I have been doing some conversions and planning a couple more. I have done a couple of basic 9speed MTB conversions with Bafang mid-drives. I have a stupidly fast BBSHD on a KHS frame, that is up tuned a bit, as my daily driver, trailer puller, etc. I just finished a conversion on a Priority Continuum Onyx frame with a Gates carbon drive and Enviolo variable hub. The belt alignment took a while to figure out, but it seems to be working great now. I need up buying a dished cog meant for another motor and then putting spacers in to get the alignment precise. I need to adjust the overdrive on the Enviolo now, but aside from that it is incredibly fun to ride.
I also have a 1500w fatbike, 27x4.5 monster from Addmotor. It is too big for me and I plan to sell it in the next few months. As a bike though, it is amazing and currently my favorite bike to ride. It competes with a none ebike from priority. I have the base 600 series with the pinion gear box. That thing is an amazing piece of engineering. The BB is all integral so it cannot take a normal conversion, but I have thought it might be possible to put one of the CYC's, but I think it woudl require a custom chain ring. I may look into 3d printing at the Maker Space here, since a lot of chainrings are now 3d printed it seems.
I have a CYC Photon and a TongZhen torque sensing mid-drive made to work with a coaster break. I just ordered a couple of very simple frames for those builds. A single speed klunker for the tongzhen and a 26"x4.5 9sp fat bike frame for the CYC Photon. Both from STATE bike. They are not super high end frames or components, but I find this is sometimes much better for conversions, for a variety of reasons. The main reason is that weight is not the same variable on an e-bike as it is on conventional bike. So a heavier frame, or even components might be better in terms of durability and realiabity, given the unique sorts of wear and stress associated with a mid-drive motor. I will often switch out the base components anyway, e.g. a Lekkie ring on the front and maybe upgrade of the rear cassette, etc. I have standardized my builds at 48v 17.5aH and use hard case batteries so they are all interchangeable. I learned in my first re-build on a hub motor and battery about 10 years ago that as Johnny Nerd Out is always saying, you must ensure the quality fo the cells in your battery. First battery i bought was pretty random from an OEM in Germany. The cells were garbage, so now I tend only buy motors and batteries from more or less "trusted sources". Both Modern Bike (for Gates drive stuff) and Golden Motor seem to me reliable so far. I imagine others have had various different expreinces though.
I purchased a couple of coaster frames to try the tongzhen on, but it can not accomodate a BB conversion, which seems odd on a coaster break mid-drive motor, since most coaster bikes have the larger American BB. I converted to a threaded, but the tolerances did not work with motor, even after some hand machinging. I think they should change that about that particular motor.
I really want to put the CYC Photon on a Gates drive, but the chainring seems proprietary and they do not seem to make a gates cog the fits onto the motor. Plus on belt drives the alignment has to be perfect. With a chain and cassette the chain line is moving and there is tolerance. With the belt if you get it wrong it simply throws the belt and damages it over time.
Anyway... that is what I am surrently up to... I am planning on taking some pics later this week and may post some. My daily driver is pretty utilitarian and uglified. The Contimuum conversion probably wants to be re-wired for aesthetics, but it is not terrible. I will post if I takes pics later.
