Almost all the videos of installing the gear change sensor I have seen show it being put down near the derailleur and I have read comments about cleaning being necessary. I live at the end of a mile of dirt road which is either very dusty or very muddy.
Recently I saw a 3yr old video by an Australian woman and she put it right next to the shifter. To me this seems to be a very good outcome for a little bit of extra fiddling around. What do others think, especially Johnny if he reads this?
Here is the link, and the relevant bit starts just before the 9min mark - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqqoSZ-UsAw&t=10s .
@rocl Check out video at 4 minutes about where JNO put the shift sensor:
I have just found that there are extension wires available for just this issue.
One thing I found out today when I did it is that the wires aren't long enough when the sensor is next to the changer. I could take it off and put it just above where the cable enters the frame which I think I have seen somewhere, or I could make one of the wires a bit longer. Not sure how difficult that would be.
If I take the cable out again, I don't think I would be able to get it back through again as it was very touch and go this time, so I would need to buy a new inner and also buy a pair of cutters that would go through the outer cable. I used a hacksaw to shorten the end at the derailleur but the little cap thing covers that little mess up.
