i agree with 1fitz depends on the chainstay. i have the ascend moher hunting bike from cabelas and outfitted it with the bbshd and my chainstay will only allow me to fit a 34 tooth chainring. i currently have the mighty miny 30 tooth chainring on and have incredible climbing power my rear cassette is a 10 speed 11-48 . my top speed is about 34 mph on a flat with tires ( 4.9 inch ) filled to 20 psi. very bumpy ride. in addition i had to have the chainstay notched and modified to fit the bbshd. not recomended to do unless you are or know a professional welder with frame building experience. to sum it up the bigger your chainring is the less hill climbing power you have but gain speed, hope this helped
