I want to convert my diamondback haanjo hybrid bike. I would like the option to both ride casually at high speeds for fun and to dial in assistance for exercise. It seems like torque sensing tongsheng might be better for exercise but it also sounds like the bafang handles high speeds a lot better, so I'm not sure which direction to go.

Did you end up converting your Haanjo? I have a Haanjo and am considering the CYC motor.
The Tong-Sheng, while problematic, can be a worthy investment if you are willing to do the inevitable repairs yourself--or pay a hefty sum to the few vendors who service them. I have a Tong-Sheng with about 1,600 miles on it. Around mile 1,400 I did blow the controller. There isn't much out there for DIY videos on repairs, but I found a good video in Polish (which I don't speak) but could see everything that was needed in the video for the repair. It is up and running fine now, just had to fork out an extra $75 for a new controller. What I like about the Tong Sheng (and I have a 750 watt) is that it means I pedal harder as a commuter to get to where I am going, I get there much sooner than riding without a motor, and unlike the Bafang, I feel like a got a bit of a work-out. If your looking for a rocket-ride, then by all means get the Bafang, it won't disappoint. You can set the Bafang to lower pedal assist modes and it'll cut out the motor-assist earlier into your pedaling and that'll mean you get your exercise--it just feels a little unnatural compared to the Tong Sheng. With the Bafang you get an "all or nothing" in terms of assist-- It's like OMG you get the power, and OMG--it's gone--pedal hard--". As a footnote, the Bafang too is sometimes known to fail (albeit less often for sure). I know I have one I'm going to crack open soon to find out why it failed (after 2,300 miles).
As a professional installer, I have installed both. Hands down, I recommend the Bafang. Bafang wires coming from the motor are all terminated as femaie connectors. The tszd2 has male connectors. Why is that important? If you accidently bend the the males pins, the motor is essentially ruined. On the Bafang, you can't mess up female connections. It's a very smart design decision on the part of Bafang.

My local bike shop purchased and installed a tszd2 on my Catrike about 14 months ago. The system was purchased through Electrify Bike Company. I started having problems with the system about 11 months after the purchase. The system should have still been under warranty but Electrify was impossible to deal with. They were unresponsive to any and all inquires. I subsequently purchased a new Bafang BBS02 system through another company. The Bafang is a 750 watt motor and is much stronger then the tszd2 system. Also, the display that came with the Bafang is much better and gives a lot more information about battery condition and watts being used so you can get more distance from your battery. I would never buy the tszd2 again or ever deal with Electrify bike company again.
yea i only have experience w bbshd motor, and its pretty powerful. tongshen 450w has less power than bbs02, torque sensing is cool but, the bafang kits seem more refined, imo. in a few years there will likely be better motor kits, lighter and with more features than the bafangs. thats what im waiting on. but it depends on what u use the bike for most. climbing mtns hills, or more flat trails easy riding where u can prioritize speed. either way the bafang is more powerful
