''87 probably doesn't have disc brakes or disc brake mounts on the frame or fork. I would say leave it to the collectors. Start with a Donor MTB that has disc brakes already. Avid BB7s are a big plus for cable discs. A 3x8 bike makes a nice 1x8 Ebike.
